car-econThe Caribbean Economy: a reader

By: Pantin, Dennis (ed.)

This Reader has as a first objective, therefore, to provide a single source document for a representative sample of much of the pioneering work in Caribbean economy. There have been several reviews3 of the post World War II economic literature in the Caribbean but this Reader provides original source material. It seeks to complement and update a number of earlier publications of similar intent including Girvan and Jefferson (1972), Beckford and Girvan (1989), Lalta and Freckleton (1993)

The Reader provides ready access to a range of contributions to Caribbean economic literature which have sought to answer three central questions which ought to be asked of

any economy. First, how do Caribbean Economies work? Second, what are the socio economic impacts of how these economies function? Third, what ought to be done to improve the workings of these economies to realize the expectations of the populations of the region? The Reader is therefore broken up into three Parts each of which is devoted to ‘answers’ provided – by the featured authors – to each of these questions. In some instances, the selected paper addresses all three questions and its sectional location was based on a judgment as to the main focus of the paper in terms of the three identified questions.

libroDiscovering the soul of service: the nine drivers of sustainable business success

By: Berry, Leonard L.

Berry’s presentation of drivers of sustainable success in service companies is very interesting and easy to read. He carefully sets the stage for what he is looking at and describes each driver thoroughly. I think Berry has truly captured the essence of why many thriving labor-intensive service companies have been able to maintain their success. For anyone interested in understanding how good service companies continue to succeed, the lessons provided in the book are very insightful. Since an increasing number of service companies are becoming technology intensive; I hope Berry extends his research to examine the success sustainers in these types of service companies, too.

The Search for Social Entrepreneurship

by: Light, Paul Charles

Research on social entrepreneurship is finally catching up to its rapidly growing potential. In The Search for Social Entrepreneurship, Paul Light explores this surge of interest to establish the state of knowledge on this growing phenomenon and suggest directions for future research. Light begins by outlining the debate on how to define social entrepreneurship, a concept often cited and lauded but not necessarily understood. A very elemental definition would note that it involves individuals, groups, networks, or organizations seeking sustainable change via new ideas on how governments, nonprofits, and businesses can address significant social problems. That leaves plenty of gaps, however, and without adequate agreement on what the term means, we cannot measure it effectively. The unsatisfying results are apple-to-orange comparisons that make replication and further research difficult.

The subsequent section examines the four main components of social entrepreneurship: ideas, opportunities, organizations, and the entrepreneurs themselves. The copious information available about each has yet to be mined for lessons on making social entrepreneurship a success. The third section draws on Light’s original survey research on 131 high-performing nonprofits, exploring how they differ across the four key components. The fourth and final section offers recommendations for future action and research in this burgeoning field. (http://www.brookings.edu)

George Bush’s Foreign Aid: Transformation or Chaos?

by: Lancaster, Carol

In this study, CGD visiting fellow Carol Lancaster analyzes the dramatic changes in U.S. foreign aid during the Bush administration, including the increased use of aid to address failed states and to fight HIV/AIDS and the global war on terror; changes in organization; the establishment of an entirely new aid agency—the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC); new approaches to delivering aid, including the MCC’s “performance-based aid”; and the use of large amounts of aid to address a single problem, as with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Lancaster analyzes the origins of these shifts in aid, their promise, and their potential problems. She also analyzes major policy issues and organizational challenges that these changes raise. She concludes with recommendations on the purposes and organization of U.S. aid for the future. (http://www.cgdev.org/content/publications/detail/16085/)

The Global Employment Challenge

by: Ghose, Ajit K.

Abstract: This volume offers an in-depth analysis of the state of employment in the world today, providing a detailed and comprehensive picture of the serious challenges faced by today’s policy-makers. The authors argue that the precise nature of what they call ‘the employment challenge’ varies between countries and regions, as do its underlying causes and the responses of governments. But they also suggest that in a globalizing world there are policy challenges that can only be addressed at the international level. The authors warn that if the international community and national governments fail to take corrective action immediately, what is now an employment problem will soon become an employment crisis in all parts of the world. The book’s empirical focus is on four groups of states: developing countries, developed countries, Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. It offers groundbreaking analysis of the nature and characteristics of employment and of emerging trends in these areas, as well as valuable information derived using both new and established indicators of employment and unemployment. The study also looks in detail at certain specific questions such as the unequal distribution of productive resources and the failure of globalization to alter this, the relationship between employment and poverty reduction in developing countries, and the rise in non-standard employment in developed countries. Agenda for the Nation

by: Aaron , Henry J.

More powerful and affluent today than ever, the United States has promising opportunities to influence the course of history. Yet these prospects are shadowed by significant perils and burdens. In this visionary book, leading scholars from the Brookings Institution and other prominent research organizations and universities analyze the major domestic and foreign policy problems facing the nation over the next five to ten years.

The challenges on the domestic front are formidable: assuring fair but affordable access to health care, shoring up retirement income for an aging population, encouraging long-term economic growth, easing the growing pains of an increasingly diverse society, and reconciling energy policies with environmental concerns.

In international affairs the central task is to use America’s unprecedented power wisely and to protect a homeland that has been revealed as surprisingly vulnerable. Yet efforts must also focus on improving the economic fortunes of poorer countries, expanding trade, and reforming the rules that regulate the flows of capital across national borders.

Is the United States government capable of rising to these vast and varied challenges? The concluding chapters of this book offer cautious optimism. While it is often criticized, the American political system is fundamentally resilient and flexible.

Ambitious in scope, Agenda for the Nation provides thoughtful, constructive answers to questions of how the U.S. government can effectively serve its citizens and meet its global responsibilities in a world of opportunity and uncertainty.(http://www.brookings.edu/press/Books/2003/agendaforthenation.aspx)
