Capital in the Twenty-First Century

Thomas Piketty, economista Francés,  es el autor del libro titulado Capital in the Twenty-First Century.  Este libro sobre la historia de la riqueza y cuya traducción al inglés es de 700 páginas ha creado sensación en sólo dos semanas.  Se incluyó en la lista de “best-sellers” del periódico New York Times.  Piketty es un respetado investigador sobre la distribución de la riqueza que a través de un análisis sin precedente del pasado propone terminar con el pensamiento y conocimiento actual sobre la desigualdad.

El autor está de visita por una semana a partir del 11 de mayo, en  Washington, DC. Visitará los principales centros de política pública de Estados Unidos, tales como, el Economic Policy Institute, el White House Council of Economic Advisers, y  el Government Accountability Office entre otros.  Los corresponsales se asombran de que Piketty puede hablar por 45 minutos sin notas.

En la reseña escrita por Emiley Eakin para el Chronicle Review,  de abrill 17, 2014 se incluyó la siguiente cita:  «The top of the wealth distribution has been rising at 6 to 7 percent per year—three times faster than the world economy».  Otros economistas reconocidos, también, hacen referencia a estos datos económicos, sin embargo, lo que sorprende de Piketty es su audaz tesis sobre el capitalismo. La tesis fundamental del libro es que la deigualdad es intrínseca al capitalismo y si no se combate es probable que aumente a niveles que amenazaría nuestra democracia y fallaría en sostener cualquier crecimiento económico.

La seriedad, la gran cantidad de data, y el análisis histórico riguroso, merecen que leamos este acercamiento distinto al tema económico desde una perspectiva no convencional como la de este autor.
